I know that I have not done much yet with this blog and there is a reason for that. As many of you know I have been working very hard on making major modifications to the site that will not only expand what you see already but will also allow me to more easily maintain and add to it, I am hoping for a relaunch very soon. In addition to the modifications to this site I have also been putting together a new site for the blog that will not only encompass Camaros but all Chevrolets new and old. It will be located at www.Chevrolets.info and we expect that it will be up and running the first week of June 2010. We hope to see you there!
First Chevrolet Camaro Ever Built Found!
There are few icons in the muscle car world that can stand up to the Camaro as far as what they make people feel. No matter if it is nostalgia for your youth, a matter of they are a piece of American automotive history, racing history or anything else that you can think of the Camaro is an important part of our automotive heritage.
As such the never ending search for the first Camaro ever built has been an important one for many people. The questions of what is it, what were its options or just a plane desire to see a great piece of history have nagged many of us. Well it seems that that question may finally be answered. The Norwood built 1967 Camaro VIN 7N100001 has surfaced and it has surfaced in a rather unexpected form, a former race car. A truly fitting way for the first Camaro built to spend its life in our opinion. It is still early and the authenticity of the car is yet to be 100% verified and there are some pressing questions yet to be answered but it is not looking all that bad in the early stages of research.
Some background on the Camaros from a VIN perspective. There are two VIN #100001 Camaros that were built. One for each of the two plants producing them. That means one from the LOS or LA, California plant and one from the NOR Norwood, Ohio plant. Norwood started it’s production before the LOS plant making the first one to roll off the line a Norwood car from a time line perspective.
The history of the car is still being researched and if anyone reading this remembers this former race car please contact us so that we can pass the information along to the current owners.
What we know of the car currently is very limited and limited to the knowledge of it being raced in the early/mid seventies in Kansas with a blue and white paint scheme and later the Bushmaster name was added to it. The VIN and trim tag for the car decodes as follows-
12337 = Camaro 6cyl Sport Coupe, base model cost $2,446.00

1967 Chevrolet Camaros Z28 302 engine capable of 448hp according to GM engineering
Among the many things that I have been working on to ad to the site is going through and scanning all of the old letters, bulletins, engineering info, etc. That I have accumulated over the years as part of my research. As I scan them and reread or in some cases read for the first time some of the items I have I will occasionally come ascross something that will surpirse me. Not sure how long I have had this letter but it is of great interest to those that are interested in the Z28 no matter what year you have. It is a Chevrolet Inter Organization letter dated June 6th of 1967 detailing the service pack Camaro Z28 engine. Those of us that follow the Z28 are more than familiar with the 302 wether it is in a 67, 68 or 1969 Z and nobody ever believed that the rated 290hp was even close to the actual potential output. This letter, can be seen here (http://www.chevroletcamaros.com/pages/gmpaperwork/internalpapers/z28memojune567pg1.html) would seem to confirm that fact.
According to the letter the 302 was capable of a maximum of 448hp (Under perfect conditions) at 7400rpm. A high reving number but anyone who has ever raced a Z knows that they were pushed into that range. The actual horse power according to the letter in vehicle trim would be more along the lines of 403hp but even at that number it is a staggering difference over the advertised 290bhp. Does anyone have any old track infomration on a car similarly equiped to this with ET’s?
